L’origine storica di Valgreghentino è alquanto incerta, mancano prove o ritrovamenti sul territorio che attestino la presenza di antichi abitatori; sicuramente, comunque, fu abitata nel XIII secolo. Il toponimo (fino alla fine del Settecento era soltanto Greghentino) deriva da “gorgant”, ossia ‘gorgo di torrente’, ed è lo stesso dell’omonimo corso d’acqua a carattere torrentizio che attraversa la zona. Da Valgreghentino, in epoca romana, passava la via Spluga, strada romana che metteva in comunicazione Milano con Lindau passando dal passo dello Spluga e questo ponte ne è una testimonianza.

The historical origin of Valgreghentino is somewhat uncertain; there are no findings or evidence in the area proving the presence of ancient inhabitants. However, it was certainly inhabited in the thirteenth century. The toponym (until the end of the eighteenth century, it was ‘Greghentino’ only) derives from ‘gorgant’, that is ‘creek whirlpool’, and it is the same name of the torrential stream that runs through the area. In Roman times, the Via Spluga crossed Valgreghentino; it was a Roman road connecting Milan to Lindau via the Splügen Pass, and the remains of this bridge are a proof of its presence.
